Coogan cited several measures of recent progress, saying the city’s average home value has risen from about $350,000 in 2020 to more than $468,000 today and that violent crime has fallen "by 23%" since 2020 while total crime is "nearly 12%" lower. He attributed improvements to strategic planning, budgeting and partnerships, and said an improved bond rating has reduced borrowing costs and allowed investment in infrastructure, schools and public safety. Those figures were presented by Coogan as part of his remarks and were not independently verified at the ceremony.
The mayor also highlighted the school system, saying enrollment has grown from 10,220 students in 2020 to more than 11,000 today and called for expanded vocational and early-childhood programs. On waterfront development, Coogan said the Taunton River Waterfront is being reimagined to reconnect the city with its natural assets and support local businesses.
Coogan closed by stressing transparent, disciplined governance. "We will spend responsibly. We will demand accountability and we will respect every dollar," he said, adding that his administration will pursue grants and partnerships "without placing undue burden on our taxpayers." The ceremony concluded with musical selections and a benediction; the council later adjourned following the formal business of the inauguration.
