Chief Corey Thorne, chief of the East Point Fire Department, told the meeting the department holds an ISO rating of 1, the highest classification from the Insurance Services Office, and said that rating helps lower insurance premiums for local homeowners and businesses. "We currently have a ISO rating of 1, which is the best rating that you can get," Thorne said.
Thorne announced the department's eighth annual Santa Ride Along, scheduled for December, in which firefighters dress as Santa and travel in a caravan through city neighborhoods so children can take photos, speak with Santa and receive a toy. "This is the eighth annual, Santa Ride Along," he said, and recounted that he began playing Santa in 1995 under then-Chief Ronnie Few, revived the tradition after becoming interim chief in 2018 and now involves his family and department personnel.
The chief also described a city program that provides smoke detectors and CO2 detectors to East Point residents and includes installation by department personnel. Thorne urged residents to schedule an appointment for installation, noting the devices use 10-year batteries and that the department will return to replace them if needed. He gave the department phone number for requests: (404) 559-6401.
In addition to installations, the department offers free home safety inspections: when crews visit to install a detector or at a separate appointment they will review home safety issues and provide guidance on fire prevention. Thorne closed by thanking the community for its support and encouraging residents to call the listed number for assistance or to suggest improvements.
No formal votes or policy decisions were recorded during the presentation. The items described were presented as program updates and outreach plans; residents seeking installations or inspections were directed to the department phone number.
