Council member Jaya told the Committee of the Whole on Jan. 6 that her family is moving out of Ward 4 and that she will resign her seat, with her expected final meeting on Feb. 2.
Jaya said she has been in contact with the mayor and city administrator about a fair, competitive appointment process for someone to serve the remainder of the two-year term; she encouraged interested Ward 4 residents to apply and offered to speak with potential candidates. Jaya said she will continue to be involved in other community roles, including serving on the alternate response task force.
Colleagues offered thanks and personal remarks. Council member James thanked Jaya for collaborative work, citing productive two‑by‑two meetings, and the mayor and others praised her service. City administrator White and the city clerk were identified as coordinating the appointment process.
Jaya said she expects Feb. 2 to be her last meeting and reiterated that she will remain a Urbana resident and continue community involvement in other capacities.
