MSU Extension staff introduce programs; commissioners discuss restoring conservation district support

At the start of public comment, Monica Jean, an agronomist with Michigan State University Extension who said she oversees field-crop research in the county, introduced herself and noted MSU Extension’s active outreach, including eight research plots in Gratiot County. Ashley Foster, the county 4-H coordinator, described youth programming and upcoming parliamentary-procedure training for participants and said enrollment is growing.

Later during commissioner reports and the appointments discussion, members raised concerns the county had removed the conservation district from a list of boards and stopped providing modest funding the district used as seed money to win grants and support two young staffers who do on-farm testing and outreach. Commissioners and a conservation district representative (identified in the meeting by first name Kevin and by a speaker who said they serve as district director) described services including farm and soil testing, tire collections, school outreach days and technical assistance. Commissioners discussed whether statutory or contractual constraints limit direct county funding and asked staff to check how the district had been treated historically and whether contract mechanisms or millage funding were appropriate.

The conservation district indicated it can provide a short presentation and materials; commissioners encouraged outreach to local farmers and asked the district to return with a brief presentation to the board.

Next steps: the conservation district will be invited to present and the clerk/staff will check historical funding records and options for contracting or other support mechanisms.
