Summary
The commission approved a conditional use permit allowing outdoor sales and display for a Rural King‑style store at the Glen Place Mall (300 Mall Boulevard), with staff clarifying the permit does not allow open storage of building materials or automotive parts.
The Mainland Planning Commission voted unanimously Jan. 6 to grant a conditional use permit that would allow outdoor sales, display and retail‑oriented storage for a Rural King‑type retailer at 300 Mall Boulevard within the Glynn Place Mall area.
Christina Wright, senior planner, told commissioners the conditional use permit would permit retail‑oriented outdoor displays—such as tractors, attachments and similar merchandise—under section 7.12 of the county code but would not authorize open storage of building materials, automobile parts or similar debris. Wright said there is existing unauthorized outdoor storage elsewhere on the mall property, but staff understood that those materials were being removed.
Chuck Moulton, representing the applicant, said Rural King was excited to come to Glynn County and that the company sees the store as a potential anchor that could help revitalize the mall.
Public comments included several speakers who supported the store as a positive reinvestment for the mall area and expressed excitement about new shopping options. No opposition was recorded during the hearing.
Commissioners discussed the mall's condition and potential economic stimulus from the new tenant; a motion to approve the CUP passed unanimously. Staff and the applicant will follow any standard site‑plan and permitting conditions before a building permit is issued.
