Commission approves revised Boys & Girls Club site plan in Hobe Sound; new 28,000 sq ft facility cleared

Martin County commissioners unanimously approved a revised final site plan for a new Boys & Girls Club facility at 11500 Southeast Lares Avenue in the Hobe Sound Community Redevelopment Area.

Growth Management principal planner John Sennett described the 5.04‑acre redevelopment as a new 28,142 sq ft facility with programming spaces, a teen center and a gymnasium; the clubhouse and gymnasium would be demolished and replaced per CRA setbacks and design guidance. Staff recommended alternative compliance for facade transparency, saying full transparency could present safety concerns for children.

Architect Raul Ocampo explained security‑driven window sill heights (5 ft 6 in) and described the gymnasium as a multipurpose performance space with bleacher seating for roughly 150–170 people. He described outdoor classrooms, raised gardens and ADA‑accessible facilities. Commissioners praised the organization’s programming record, cited prior successful projects in Stewart and Indiantown, and said the facility would provide vocational and mental‑health supports for children.

Public commenters, including local NAACP and community leaders, praised the club’s record and offered support. The board adopted the site plan resolution and related documents (release of existing unities of title and acceptance of warranty deed for dedicated right of way) and authorized the chair to sign the documents.

Authorities: staff noted required right‑of‑way dedication (8.5 feet) and that alternative compliance is permitted under the Hobe Sound CRA guidelines for institutional uses. The board’s vote was unanimous.

Next steps: staff will proceed with recordation and permit finalization per the approved final site plan and resolutions.
