The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on Jan. 6 to decline participation in the FEMA land‑acquisition program and instructed staff to withdraw a pending application after the county attorney explained the program’s requirements.
County Attorney Morrison told the board that, contrary to earlier understanding, FEMA buyouts require the county to bear the 25% local match and to demolish structures and convert the acquired property to open space, which would remove the parcels from the tax rolls. Commissioners raised concerns about placing that 25% burden on Suwannee County taxpayers and the long‑term impact of removing land from the tax rolls.
Resident Steve Fontana and others had urged caution, suggesting county evaluation of drainage corrections as an alternative to permanent buyouts. Several commissioners echoed that sentiment, calling the program a “slippery slope” if the county were to pay 25% for private property buyouts. Commissioner Land moved to decline participation and Commissioner Mobley seconded; the motion to withdraw the FEMA application and not participate carried 4–0.
Attorney Morrison asked for board direction to instruct staff to withdraw the pending FEMA application; the board approved that staff instruction by separate motion, 4–0. Commissioners asked staff to continue exploring non‑buyout options such as engineering or drainage fixes where feasible.
