Monterey County Free Libraries highlights kits, digital media and free services to support New Year goals

Berenice Astengo, managing librarian with Monterey County Free Libraries, told listeners on Jan. 7 that the library system can help residents pursue New Year’s goals with books, kits and programs available free at county branches.

Astengo highlighted several lending options beyond traditional books, including downloadable audiobooks via Libby and the Palace Project marketplace and preloaded Playaway MP3 devices for patrons who prefer not to use a phone or tablet. She recommended these formats for people who want to learn while walking, commuting or exercising.

The library’s 'book club to go' kits—each containing about 10 books and a list of discussion questions—were presented as an easy way for community members to start reading groups. Astengo also described outdoor adventure kits (badminton, birdwatching, stargazing equipment, soccer balls, croquet and more) and said the county library obtained additional grant funding from the Pacific Library Partnership to expand that collection after high demand.

Astengo described mental-health kits for children, teens and adults that include books and comfort items such as stress balls or a 'worry monster.' She said patrons can search the library events calendar for programs (tech help, board games, 'Wild Wednesdays' in Marina and movies) and that Monterey County Free Libraries operates 17 branches across the county. Astengo noted library cards are free and can be applied for online.

When asked how overwhelmed visitors should begin, Astengo advised asking a librarian for help and checking branch listings and posted hours on the website; she said librarians are available to guide patrons to the resources that fit their interests.
