University of Illinois Extension reports 4‑H growth and expanded ag programming in Peoria County

Earl Allen, county extension director with the University of Illinois Extension, told the Peoria County board the four‑county Extension unit (Fulton, Mason, Peoria and Tazewell) has 35 staff and steadily expanded local programming across agriculture, nutrition, youth development and community development.

Allen said Extension’s outreach priorities vary by program area but emphasized service and local partnerships. "We had an 11% jump in club memberships this year. So we got back up over 1000," he said, describing recovery from pandemic declines in 4‑H enrollment.

Tara Heath, commercial ag crops educator, reviewed recent Extension activity in Peoria: Extension staff helped coordinate the Greater Peoria Farm Show at the Civic Center, provided statewide educational sessions in digital agriculture and nutrient‑loss reduction, and will host a local Agronomy Summit on Jan. 12 at Illinois Central College East Campus; registration was closing with about 60 participants expected.

Christy Smith, Peoria County 4‑H program coordinator, said county 4‑H serves "almost 200 youth" and that staff are expanding special‑interest ("spin") clubs. Smith highlighted partnerships such as Peoria Fashion Week for a stitch‑and‑style program, noted livestock judging coaching and previewed fair planning: county fair events are scheduled for July 15–17 with livestock likely at Stark County Fairgrounds.

The presentation prompted brief board discussion about local support and fundraising; board members and Extension staff said they would continue collaboration on fair logistics and county outreach. No board action was required; the update was received as informational and Extension staff will provide quarterly updates tied to the county’s strategic plan reporting cadence.
