Board approves several Old Town alterations, endorses conditional door waiver and notes deferred items and staff retirement

The Alexandria Board of Architectural Review completed a broad docket of Old Town alteration requests and made several administrative announcements.
Among the approvals, the board voted to allow replacement in-kind of a dilapidated gate and to relocate a small shed at 229 South Payne Street so it meets open-space rules. The board also granted a conditional approval to keep a non-wood door at 802 Pendleton Street for the short term, with the staff condition that when the door is next replaced it be made of wood; the applicants said they need time for a future replacement given winter conditions and budget constraints.
Staff announced that item 18 (a concept review for 806 North Columbus Street) has been deferred at the applicant’s request to the second meeting in January. Staff also said the City Hall approval will be appealed to City Council with a Jan. 13 hearing date and that an appeal for 910 King Street was received and is still being scheduled. The board will hold January hearings at the MARC/rec center while City Hall undergoes renovation. In a closing note, staff member Miss Hellman, who has served in the planning office for many years, was recognized on her final hearing before retirement.
Motions for the items passed either by voice or roll-call votes as required by demolition rules; the board closed the hearing and set the next meeting date for January.
