The Alexandria City Council on Dec. 13 unanimously adopted a proclamation declaring Dec. 13, 2025 as Chris Collins Dance Studio fiftieth anniversary day.
Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley read the proclamation in council chambers, saying the city "values the vitality and cultural richness of its small businesses" and described Chris Collins and his studio as "an extraordinary Alexandrian" that has "welcomed thousands of Alexandria children and families" since its founding in 1975. The proclamation credited Collins' parents "Bill and Ruth Collins" with helping the studio launch and noted an annual Ruth and Bill Collins Award of Excellence presented to outstanding students.
Founder Chris Collins, who joined attendees at the front of the chamber, thanked the council and the community. "I didn't know I would have to speak, but I'm kind of overwhelmed," he said, adding, "Thanks to a fabulous staff and our family of students...we're gonna continue into the future." The council approved the proclamation on a voice vote after a motion from Vice Mayor Bagley and a second from Councilwoman Green.
Why it matters: The proclamation celebrates a small business milestone and recognizes a local arts institution that council and residents said has contributed to culture and youth arts education for multiple generations.
What happens next: The proclamation is ceremonial; it does not create new city policy but formally acknowledges the studio's community role as Alexandria prepares a series of civic events tied to the city's 250th national anniversary in 2026.
