Iroquois County board to declare two County Board District 4 vacancies, outlines appointment timeline

Speaker 3, a board member, told colleagues that the board will present resolutions on Tuesday to declare two vacancies in County Board District 4, one for the remainder of Mr. Geiger’s term (ending Nov. 30, 2026) and one for Mr. Watts’s term (ending Nov. 30, 2028).
Once the board declares the vacancies, Speaker 3 said, letters must be sent to each political party within three days of the declaration before the appointment process can proceed. The two appointees would be appointed to serve until Nov. 30, 2026; at the November election the Geiger seat will appear on the ballot as a four-year term and the Watts seat will appear as a two-year unexpired term, Speaker 3 said.
“Once those declarations are made, then there will be a letter that has to be sent to each of the political parties within 3 days of the declaration,” Speaker 3 said. The speaker added that the board has 60 days to fill the seats but noted there is no repercussion if no candidates are available.
Speaker 3 said County Board member Paul will bring names to the board when the appointment process begins. No formal appointment occurred during this meeting; the item is scheduled for action in an upcoming session.
