Monroe Township council installs new president and vice president; adopts personnel salary ordinance

At its Jan. 5 reorganization and regular meetings, Monroe Township Council appointed Rupa Siegel as council president and Michael Markell as vice president, adopted a supervisory personnel 2026 salary ordinance, and approved the consent agenda with three items pulled for separate consideration.
Rupa Siegel was appointed council president and sworn into office during the Monroe Township Council’s Jan. 5 reorganization meeting, and Michael Markell was appointed and sworn in as council vice president. Both appointments were approved by roll call votes during the reorganization session.
The council then held its agenda and regular meetings. Members voted to adopt Ordinance O-1-2026-001, the supervisory personnel 2026 salary and wage ordinance for Monroe Township, Middlesex County. The ordinance passed on a roll-call vote with all members recorded as voting Yes.
Council also approved the consent agenda (Resolutions R-1-2026-003 through R-1-2026-030) by roll call after council member(s) asked that three items — R-1-2026-008, R-1-2026-016 and R-1-2026-019 — be removed for separate consideration. The removed items were then considered and approved separately; the roll call on those items recorded Councilwoman Miriam Cohen and other members voting Yes, and Councilman Charles DePiro recorded an Abstain on at least one of the pulled items.
Vote tallies recorded on the record included the reorganization appointments: Councilwoman Miriam Cohen (Yes), Councilman Charles DePiro (No) on the president appointment, Councilman Michael Markell (Yes), Councilwoman Rupa Siegel (Yes) and Councilman Van Zora (Yes); the motion carried to appoint Siegel president. The vice-president resolution was carried by roll call with all Yes votes recorded. Specifics of the abstention on a pulled consent item were recorded in the roll call when those items were considered.
A motion to adjourn the agenda meeting and later the regular meeting carried unanimously. The council adjourned at 7:26 p.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
