Grand County Commission elects Melody McCandless chair in 5–2 vote; vice chair nomination bundled into motion

The Grand County Commission voted to elect Commissioner Melody McCandless as chair for calendar year 2026, passing a motion that also nominated the presiding officer as vice chair.
The presiding officer opened the meeting and said county practice favors rotating the chair. "I would like to nominate commissioner Melody McCandless to serve as the chair of the Grand County Commission and myself as vice chair for the 2026 calendar year," the presiding officer said. The motion was seconded and put to a vote.
During brief discussion, Commissioner Hetman said she supported McCandless but expressed a preference that a vice chair reflect the minority when the commission is divided. Commissioner McGahn and others recalled past practice in which vice chairs were not always politically aligned with chairs.
The presiding officer called the question. The motion carried 5 to 2; the transcript records Commissioner Houdini and Commissioner McGahn as opposed. After the vote the outgoing presiding officer yielded the seat and the newly elected chair said she was "excited to be the chair this year." The commission then moved on to public comment.
Why it matters: Leadership selections set the commission's chair agenda and committee assignments for the year and shape who controls meeting procedures and priority items. The bundled motion (chair plus vice chair) drew comment about whether the vice chair should represent the minority.
