The City of Indianapolis reminded residents of winter driving precautions and detailed municipal snow-response thresholds and shelter activation rules during the December Tuesday '10 broadcast.
Mayor's Neighborhood Advocate Dara Marquez said the city's public works leadership will evaluate plowing connector streets near schools and city facilities when snowfall reaches 2 inches, and will consider calling contractors for residential-street clearing when accumulation reaches 4 inches; the city will nevertheless prioritize main thoroughfares used by first responders.
Marquez also summarized the city’s winter contingency plan for people experiencing homelessness: Wheeler Mission provides traditional winter services, the city maintains an overflow shelter for families and single women on the west side of North Tipps Avenue that will be open Dec. 1–March 31, and a weather-activated overflow shelter for single men at West Morris Free Methodist Church will open based on National Weather Service forecasts and city temperature guidelines. The city said it will give at least a 10-hour notice when the men's shelter is activated and that, when open, the shelters will operate from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.; they may remain open past 8 a.m. if severe conditions persist.
Marquez urged residents to drive cautiously in icy conditions, to clear sidewalks and hydrants near their homes, and to consult the Office of Public Health and Safety pages on the City's website for the latest activation notices and shelter details.
