Mayor Wilson schedules homelessness summit, announces holiday closures and inauguration details

Mayor Wilson used the Nov. 25 Birmingham City Council meeting to announce holiday operations details, community events and a homelessness convening.
Wilson said City offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28, with police, fire and 9-1-1 services continuing. He told residents whose regular trash and recycling pickup falls on Thursday that their collection will occur on Saturday, Nov. 29, and that other pickups will follow the regularly scheduled days.
The mayor also announced the City of Birmingham, in partnership with 1 Roof, will host the State of Homelessness: Redefining Community symposium on Monday, Dec. 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Regents Field, 1401 1st Avenue South. The mayor described the event as free and open to the public and encouraged registration on Eventbrite.
Wilson invited the community and council to an inauguration event at 5 p.m. tonight at Boutwell Auditorium (1930 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard) celebrating the start of a third term; he described the event as free and open to all. He also offered condolences to the family of Melba Lankford, noting her public service and work for District 8 residents.
Several council members thanked the mayor and signaled interest in participating in the homelessness summit and following up on summit materials that staff has circulated. No formal motion or council action was recorded for these announcements.
