Council authorizes network overhaul, approves hyperconverged infrastructure purchase

Wooster City Council voted unanimously on Jan. 5 to authorize the purchase of a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) to replace the city's aging server and storage environment.
Mister Abernathy described the project as replacing the city's server storage and virtual environment with an HCI, which combines computing, storage, networking and virtualization in a single software-defined system. "It's more cost efficient and, honestly, just better for the city as a whole to just get a whole new system together," Abernathy said, adding the current equipment is past its useful life and piecemeal repairs have become expensive.
IT staff answered council questions about security and deployment. Joel said the new architecture will enhance security and will be implemented primarily on-premise; some control elements will use cloud-hosted services. Council asked about procurement lead times; staff said they are purchasing off a state contract and that lead times currently look reasonable. Council moved to adopt the resolution; following a second, the roll-call vote was unanimous in favor.
