Policy 8.15 will restore missing definitions and delegate authority to the superintendent to implement generative AI guidelines; the committee discussed using ARs to allow faster updates and signaled ARs will include separate staff and student provisions and misuse consequences.
The Wallingford-Swarthmore School District Policy Committee discussed updates to Policy 8.15 (appropriate use of technology) and how the district will govern generative AI. Speaker 3 said the updated policy restores a definition section that was accidentally deleted in 2023 and adds delegation language authorizing the superintendent to implement generative AI guidelines to support instruction, administrative efficiency and student learning.
Speaker 3 described two administrative regulations (8.15 and 8.15-1) that will accompany the policy so the district can evolve rules more quickly as tools change. "The thought was the more that could be in regulation makes it a little bit easier to change, and then it gave us a place to evolve to," Speaker 3 said. The ARs are expected to include sections for students and staff, outline consequences for misuse, and set approval processes for staff access to tools.
Some committee members asked why the material is in ARs rather than a stand-alone policy; presenters said the intent is to give administrators flexibility to update practices and that, if the community or the committee later determines the rules need a formal policy, the ARs could be expanded into a policy.
The committee previewed that ARs reflecting community forum input and administrative work would appear on the next agenda.
