Brookfield — Selectmen proposed changes to two warrant articles addressing property tax relief for veterans and elderly residents. The changes were presented during the budget and warrant public hearing.
On Article 10, officials proposed amending RSA 72:35 to consolidate multiple veterans tax credits into a single optional credit of $1,650 for service‑connected total and permanent disability. Officials said the change responds to recent state rule changes that prevent stacking multiple veterans credits, and that the new single credit should preserve the benefit level for qualifying veterans.
Articles 11–12 were combined to update elderly exemption thresholds. The proposal keeps the exemption for residents 65–74 at $50,000, raises the 75–79 bracket from $45,000 to $65,000, and raises the 80+ exemption from $60,000 to $80,000. Income limits would increase (single persons up to $75,000; married up to $90,000) and asset caps would be adjusted; officials said DRA and counsel reviewed the language to correct prior wording problems. Selectmen noted that currently four residents participate across the tiers and that the changes would likely increase eligibility.
There were no votes on the articles at the hearing; selectmen recommended the language for the town warrant after counsel review. Final approval will be decided by voters at the March town meeting.
