FDOT representatives told the MPO that directionalization of several intersections along State Road 776, including Biscayne Drive, has yielded early safety improvements; traffic counts and truck percentages were cited during the presentation.
Florida Department of Transportation staff updated the Charlotte County MPO on safety work along State Road 776, reporting directionalization of multiple intersections and preliminary crash reductions at the Biscayne Drive location.
FDOT’s Walter Bergerman said average daily traffic (ADT) in the Biscayne area is about 39,000 vehicles with roughly 8% truck traffic and that, prior to changes, the intersection showed multiple fatal or serious‑injury crashes. Directionalization and other safety treatments were implemented at Biscayne and Cornelius in May 2025, and FDOT has observed improved operations and fewer crash types associated with those movements.
Bergerman said other corridor intersections were held for later implementation pending coordination (for example, coordination with the fire department about an emergency signal at Collins). Board members asked for continued monitoring and data as the program expands along the corridor.
