Charlotte County commissioners on April 17 pressed staff for a consolidated accounting of hurricane recovery expenditures and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reimbursements as they prepare federal advocacy and budget decisions.
Deputy County Administrator Emily Lewis said debris invoicing and federal reimbursement processes often lag and that, to date, the county has received intermittent tranches. Gordon Berger, director of budget administrative services, reported roughly $44,000,000 had been returned in tranches associated with expedited projects, and staff described county-program figures such as roughly $94,000,000 in debris-removal costs for Ian (county portion) and about $29,000,000 for emergency protective measures in early briefings.
Commissioners requested a one-page ‘scoreboard’ that lays out major reimbursement categories (debris removal, emergency protective measures, infrastructure repairs), funds received to date, outstanding obligations, and anticipated local cost-shares. Commissioner Joaquin said he will be meeting with U.S. senators on disaster-reform issues next week and asked for numbers to bring to those meetings.
Lewis said staff are developing dashboards and real-time project-status updates for hurricane recovery projects and will provide what they can by the next meeting, although she cautioned holiday timing and staff availability might limit immediate production of a complete package.
Next steps: staff will produce a concise briefing document and accelerate dashboard rollout to provide commissioners and federal delegations clearer, consolidated figures on incurred costs, reimbursements received and outstanding obligations.
