County staff announced that Franklin County was awarded a federal Safe Roads grant estimated at $825,820 to fund a slate of safety projects including crosswalk improvements, signage and county flood‑sensing technology.
Staff described the breakdown: federal grant funds of $660,656, a state match of $156,906.09 and an expected county contribution of roughly $8,258 to cover the remaining cost if the project proceeds to its estimated total of about $825,820. Staff said $123,400 of the award was earmarked for projects in Wellsville and $207,386.40 for projects in Ottawa, with the remainder allocated to county locations.
Officials said the grant will support a strategic approach to local safety problems — from pedestrian crosswalks to flood sensors that will alert county crews and integrate with road‑closure mapping tools. Staff also reported the state is likely to provide an additional grant to fund administration of the award, which would reduce county staff time needed to manage federal grant requirements.
Commissioners congratulated staff and the Franklin County Development Council for coordinating with local cities and state partners; county staff noted the award advances previously reported priorities for crosswalks and flood mitigation.
Staff said the next procedural steps are execution of the federal and state memorandum of understanding (MOU) and coordination with the cities of Ottawa and Wellsville to finalize scopes and administration.
