Wilson said current assumptions use a 7-year refresh cycle for network equipment and a 5-year cycle for laptops. He recommended re-evaluating those timelines and exploring virtualization (a virtual desktop infrastructure, or VDI) to increase utilization efficiency; he reported public computer utilization at roughly 20% in 2025. Wilson also described security tools in use (endpoint detection, automated patching via PDQ) and said he lacked time for full annual security audits; trustees recommended quarterly or similarly paced audits to balance thoroughness and staff capacity.
After discussion, the board voted to extend the library’s current technology plan from January 2026 through June 2026 so the plan aligns with the fiscal year; the extension passed by voice vote.
Wilson said next steps include evaluating refresh cycles, exploring virtualization to improve device utilization, and prioritizing accessibility purchases and staff training.
