Lee County reopens South County Regional Library after renovation

Lee County officials and community leaders gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the grand reopening of the South County Regional Library, a project county Commissioner David Mullica described as a “happy day for everybody.”

Library System Director Mindy Simon said the renovation reflects the needs of a growing community and highlighted mechanical system upgrades, a new roof and chiller, plumbing and electrical work, interior reconfiguration, an automated materials handling system, a shared youth and teen programming space and four new study rooms. “This project is a testament to the county's commitment to libraries and the communities we serve,” Simon said.

The county staged a soft opening on Dec. 18 so the library could serve families during winter break, officials said. Facilities Director Ehab Gurgis described the work as a two-year effort to remodel 32,000 square feet, and he thanked the project team, architects and contractors for completing the renovation.

Commissioners and village officials praised the finished facility and encouraged residents to visit. Commissioner Brian Hammond said the redesign makes the space feel larger and invites community use; Commissioner Trish Petroski shared an anecdote about a student to underscore the library’s role as a place of connection.

Attendees were invited to a ribbon cutting and guided tours immediately following the remarks. Simon announced a community celebration at the library on Saturday, January 10 from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring live music, crafts and giveaways.

The ceremony closed with county leaders urging residents to check out the renovated facility and upcoming programs.
