Public commenters report progress on Fort Myers Beach commemorative arch and announce Anchor Inn ribbon cutting

Two public commenters addressed the Tourist Development Council on Jan. 8 with updates on community projects and small-business activity.
Earl Morgan, an advisor to Restore Fort Myers Beach Arches, told the council the group has selected a contractor, raised about 90% of the funds needed to build a commemorative gateway arch at Bowditch Point Regional Park and secured a dollar-for-dollar match for monetary and etched-brick donations through June 26, up to $40,000. "We have raised 90% of the funds required," Morgan said, and added that roughly 275 bricks remain available; he said the group is working with Parks & Recreation on a final development agreement that will be brought to commissioners for approval.
Zachary Markham, who with his wife owns Anchor Inn and Cottages on Sanibel, announced the property’s ribbon cutting set for Jan. 20 and that reservations open for February. He thanked municipal and county partners for support in reopening the property.
Both comments were made during the public-input portion of the agenda; no formal county action on either item was taken at this meeting.
