Johnson County’s Aging and Human Services Department briefed the board on a $200,000 one‑time KDADS legislative supplement to support the CHAMPS senior nutrition program. The county’s application was one of five statewide awards; the funding must be spent by June 30.
Carol Kohler said Johnson County has the largest CHAMPS wait list in Kansas (about 1,300 currently) and that the short grant term and limited per‑jurisdiction award (each recipient received $200,000 of a $1,000,000 statewide appropriation) mean staff will phase adding people off the wait list to avoid returning them to the list if funding lapses. The county will use a nutrition‑risk screening to prioritize the most vulnerable participants.
Commissioners emphasized advocacy to secure continued state funding, asked whether the appropriation was state general-fund (it is), and urged staff to report back to the board before June with progress and state-engagement updates. The board unanimously authorized acceptance of the grant and the reallocation/expenditure of up to $200,000 of FY2026 general‑fund reserves to match the award.
