Sand volleyball courts at Bayfront Park moving toward July opening with Prop 68 funding

Deputy Director Jay Ingram updated the commission June 4 on construction of new sand volleyball courts at Bayfront Park, showing photos that track grading and sand placement from mid-May through early June.
Ingram said work on the mound and grading began around May 19, with the mound removed by May 28 and sand partially placed by June 4. He noted the project received $177,900 from Proposition 68 and estimated completion in July "if all goes as planned." Staff confirmed the courts will be enclosed by fencing: a 10-foot fence adjacent to the multi-use path (a county request) and a 4-foot fence along the other side.
The parks and recreation commission previously approved rental fees and inclusion of the new courts in the city’s facility rental program; staff said the courts may be available for family use and rental, and the department will manage bookings through standard facility channels.
Commissioners welcomed the addition and asked about final landscaping and access; staff said fencing and perimeter planting are planned once construction and grading are complete. The department thanked community donors and Friends of Parks & Rec for supplemental funds.
Next steps: staff to continue construction, finalize planting and fence installation, and publish opening and rental information when the site is ready.
