The Mill Valley Emergency Preparedness Commission presented its annual report to the City Council March 10, outlining outreach metrics and several community preparedness initiatives including a go-bag pilot and an April 26 citywide evacuation drill.
Vice Chair Tara Huffman said the EPC's 2023–26 strategic goals are to build awareness of risks, prepare people and build community resilience. She told the council the commission participated in 21 community events last year and estimated roughly 6,333 resident interactions across those activities. Huffman described a "go bag" initiative distributed to each city employee in August and September 2024 (149 employees participated), with plans to expand distribution to residents at events and to raffle bags to encourage signups for alerts.
Huffman also reviewed public-facing materials developed by the commission, including an emergency-preparedness business one-sheet, an evacuation-plan city map used at outreach events and social-media outreach under the Mill Valley EPC handle. She asked the council to help promote Alert Marin signups and neighborhood outreach; council members suggested targeted tabling at Little League and other youth events and using banners with QR codes to capture signups in the moment.
Huffman invited residents to participate in the EPC, noted the commission meets monthly and will help staff the April 26 evacuation drill alongside CERT and Southern Marin Fire, and described ongoing collaboration with public safety staff and regional partners.
