Rexburg City Council swears in new members, elects Eric Erickson council president

Rexburg's newly elected council members took the oath of office at the Jan. 7 City Council meeting and the body named a new council president.
City Clerk Deborah Lovejoy administered the oath to Paul Erickson, Alicia Tietjen and William J. Wiggins Jr., each pledging to “faithfully discharge the duties of council member of the City of Rexburg according to the best of my ability.” The council then conducted a secret-ballot selection and chose Eric Erickson to serve as council president.
Mayor (unnamed) congratulated Erickson and thanked all who expressed interest, noting the council president position carries modest additional responsibilities and pay. The mayor said the council would discuss the president’s duties “a little more later.”
The meeting opened with a prayer from Council member Colin Erickson and remarks honoring outgoing council member Michael D. Walker. Council members presented Walker with a plaque and other gifts in recognition of his service from Jan. 3, 2018, through Jan. 8, 2026; members praised his long record of civic and emergency-services work.
The council also completed routine business items including approval of the consent calendar and payment of city bills before moving to substantive agenda items.
