Seaside city manager announces $5,000 emergency food assistance grants; commissioners report 800-plus meals distributed

Seaside City Manager Greg McDaniel told the Homeless Commission that he and Councilmember Rita Burks located funding in the city manager's budget to provide emergency food assistance grants to local providers.
"We were able to give $5,000 to Emmanuel Church in God in Christ, Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Saint Francis, New Catholic Church, and all in Monterey County to help combat the insecurity," McDaniel said, describing the awards as part of a city effort to shore up local holiday food assistance. He thanked the commission for existing partnership programs, including a food and security program and a request for proposals the commission has circulated.
Commissioner Joseph Ruffin III reported that funds granted to Bethel Missionary Baptist Church supported distribution events during the Thanksgiving period that provided "in excess of 800 individual meals," including full meals and choices for recipients preferring chicken. Ruffin said Bethel will conduct another distribution on Dec. 22 at noon, providing turkeys, hams and chickens plus toys and clothing; he encouraged volunteers to arrive earlier for breakfast and staging.
The disclosures were made during routine commission reports and staff updates; commissioners did not take any new funding votes at the meeting. Staff also noted the city's food-and-security RFP materials are available in English and Spanish for public review.
