LEFT 1 board elects officers, approves policy edits and $10,150 dental reimbursement

The LEFT 1 board met virtually on Jan. 8 and elected Lenny Greenstein as chair and Nick Dunning as chair pro tem, then approved several administrative items including policy revisions and a sizable medical reimbursement.
Jennifer, the board’s staff liaison, presented proposed edits to the LEFT 1 policies and procedures that remove references to current/active LEFT 1 members and delete sections on disability retirement and leave that the board said are no longer applicable. "We removed the language that spoke to current working LEFT 1 members as we have none," Jennifer said when introducing the edits. A motion to accept the changes was moved, seconded and carried unanimously.
The board reviewed a reimbursement request that required full-board approval: $10,150 for dental implants. Jennifer explained the process for large claims: members obtain multiple estimates, file through their insurance first, and then submit uncovered balances for reimbursement. "They go through their insurance first, and then whatever insurance does not cover is what they submit to the board for reimbursement," she said. Board members asked about typical pricing and whether LEFT 1 could require dental insurance to reduce large outlays; Jennifer said she would research whether a mandate is permissible.
Following discussion, a member moved to approve the $10,150 reimbursement. The motion was seconded and carried with no recorded opposition. Jennifer also reported other reimbursements that fell under her approval threshold and did not require board action: $761.16 (dental), $458.57 (prescription), $1,350 (massage, aggregated), $222 (vision), $637.11 (dental/prescription/radiograph), and two $304 prescription claims (one a duplicate). Jennifer confirmed she verifies whether members sought coverage through Regence/MedAdvantage or other insurers before processing reimbursements.
The board also reviewed administrative items including the 2026 advisory board stipend program and a demographic survey included in the agenda packet; Jennifer said she would follow up on whether council members must complete the survey and would distribute stipend signup/renewal paperwork. A member asked whether LEFT 1 materials could be shared at the Washington State Law Enforcement Association conference in May; Jennifer said policy documents are public and she would add the item to a future agenda.
The meeting concluded after brief remarks for the good of the order and a thank-you from the chair. The board noted Bob Cecil was absent from this session. The board did not set or adopt any new binding policy mandates at this meeting; staff follow-up was assigned for researching insurance-mandate options and clarifying demographic-survey requirements.
