The Committee on Public Safety, Emergency Management, and the Guam National Guard recessed its scheduled oversight hearing of the Guam Police Department on Jan. 9 after the department’s chief asked the committee to postpone the meeting because of a family emergency. The chair announced the continuation for Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, at 2 p.m.
Chairman Senator Sean Gumatao, who announced the recess, said the decision followed “a request by the chief of police, Steven Ignacio, for the committee to reschedule today’s oversight hearing due to a family emergency.” He added, “I do extend my thoughts and prayers to Chief Ignacio and his family.” The committee said it will distribute courtesy notices ahead of the reconvened date.
The recess is procedural: no votes were taken and no substantive testimony was heard before the committee stood in recess. The committee instructed that written testimony for the continuation may be submitted between Jan. 9 and Feb. 9, 2026, to Senator Sean Gumatao’s office mailbox at the Guam Congress Building in Haggadien or by email to office.senatorsean@guamlegislature.gov.
The next scheduled session will resume the oversight hearing and hear presentations from Guam Police Department leadership on the items the committee identified for review.
