The Carbon County Board of Commissioners on a voice vote approved a one‑year extension to a development and tax‑increment financing interlocal agreement with developer Gary Patel and Status Hospitality Group.
A county representative explained that Patel and his company intend to build a motel behind Market Express on 1st North and had entered agreements with Price City, the county and the school district that required project start by a deadline. ‘‘They asked for an extension to the deadline for them to get started on their project,’’ the presenter said, citing surveying and engineering delays as the reason for the request.
The extension covers an additional year for the developer to begin work. Commissioners discussed that the project was planned as two hotels, with the developer building one now and beginning the second after the first is completed. Commissioner Martinez moved to approve the amendment and Commissioner Jensen seconded; the motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.
Tax‑increment financing involves delaying or redirecting a portion of future property‑tax growth to support development costs. County officials said the extension was agreed to by all affected taxing entities, including the school district and Price City. The record does not include further financial details or amended incentive amounts.
Next steps: the amended interlocal agreement takes effect after formal signatures by the participating entities; county staff will monitor progress to ensure the developer meets the revised deadline.
