Sedgwick County held an agenda-review meeting in advance of its Jan. 14 session and outlined event logistics, several procurement items and procedural business to be taken up at the full meeting.
Speaker 1 opened the review and confirmed the board is reviewing the Jan. 14 agenda and an 8:30 a.m. start time so commissioners can attend a Flag 250 ceremony at 11 a.m. at the historic courthouse. Speaker 3 said, “The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office will be hosting Flag 250,” and staff noted that Emergency Management produced a winter-prep video and that county offices will be closed Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day while 911 services remain available.
The agenda review listed several items to appear on the consent and new-business calendars. Speaker 2 said the Jan. 14 packet includes a proclamation on human trafficking, one appointment/resignation and the chairman’s award. A technical resolution will amend the county’s 9‑1‑1 advisory board to add Derby Fire and Derby Police, Speaker 2 said.
Procurement items previewed included: educational services for the evening reporting center (instruction and classroom support for juvenile offenders); a prevention/early-intervention contract for departments of correction that Speaker 2 identified as a $71,000 award to MHA; trash-collection services for facilities; Older Americans Act in‑home services funded by the Department on Aging; a sheriff’s tag‑reading (“block camera”) software purchase; and two joint governmental purchases for an onboarding service and Kronos Telestaff maintenance and support. On the timekeeping system, Speaker 5 said the vendor is at end of support and staff recommends staying with the same company to reduce implementation time, cost and complexity.
Speaker 6 (Daniel) summarized bridge-weight updates embedded in the consent items, saying the packet removes 15 postings, adds seven new bridge postings and shows one bridge that has been closed since 2022 is under repair and expected to reopen this year. Speaker 2 also previewed a list of interfund transfers of unexpended 2025 budget authority and described affiliation agreements between Heart of Love and Homebody and IDD service providers.
On governance, Speaker 7 explained the customary process for selecting the board chair and chair pro tem: any commissioner may nominate, including self-nomination; no second is required; if there is only one nominee the chair likely would be chosen by voice vote; if multiple nominations occur, the county clerk will provide ballots and commissioners will write in names until a candidate attains three votes. Speaker 7 noted this practice is not mandated by statute or county code.
Speakers also discussed upcoming legislative activity and external meetings. Speaker 8 said the legislative session opens Monday, that staff expect to testify Wednesday and that the board may add a report to the agenda. Participants discussed coordination when more than two commissioners attend external sessions and whether the public and media will be included in certain remote events.
The agenda-review meeting ended with staff reminding commissioners of a small reception after the review and the plan to attend the 11 a.m. flag ceremony; no formal votes or final actions were taken during the review.
