The Parks and Recreation Board voted to fund a permanent stone sculpture at the board’s Oct. 6 meeting and also reviewed two staff initiatives intended to improve community engagement and event funding.
The sculpture: A board member said additional parks funding exists and proposed allocating about $2,000 to commission a permanent stone carving (an eagle statue) to be contracted and installed; staff estimated the artist’s process and contracting could take up to 24 weeks. Sheila made the motion to move forward with the stone carving; Malia seconded, and the board approved the measure by voice vote.
Digital map: Staff demonstrated an updated GIS parks virtual-tour map that will allow desktop and mobile users to locate amenities (amphitheaters, courts, historical sites), view park photos, and link to each park’s page. Staff said photo updates, minor bug fixes and mobile testing remain before public launch.
Sponsorship packet and events funding: Staff presented a new sponsorship packet for city events and programs, reported $1,500 raised for Halloween since the packet’s September launch, and described plans for a targeted December–January outreach to prior sponsors and website hosting of the packet.
What’s next: Staff will pursue contractual steps for the sculpture and will return with timeline details; they will finish GIS-photo updates and adjust the map for mobile, and staff plan a formal sponsorship rollout in December and January with targeted email outreach to prior sponsors.
Provenance: Topic introduced SEG 778; sculpture motion and vote SEG 1154—6, SEG 1218—61246.
