"Basically it'll have it'll give us 50 cameras, 50 body worn cameras for our deputies," one presenter said, adding the procurement would also update about 100 in‑car camera systems and two interview rooms.
Staff said the purchase is intended to improve transparency, evidence processing and training. The presentation emphasized expected operational benefits: easier transfer of footage to the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, faster identification of training needs and consolidated recordkeeping for accreditation.
Board discussion focused on funding and timing. A county finance representative told the board the county currently receives roughly $900,000 a year from school‑zone camera fines and that the Axon contract was estimated at about $460,000 annually. Presenters said the county intends to use school‑zone camera revenue for the contract and will not repurpose that fund for other uses during the contract period unless sufficient funds accrue to cover that change.
After brief discussion a supervisor asked that the item be pulled from consent originally for fuller review but later agreed to return it to the consent agenda once the funding explanation was clarified.
Next steps: staff said the item will be handled through the consent calendar at the evening meeting unless a supervisor requests further review; the county will proceed with contract execution only after ensuring funding projections support the multi‑year commitment and that evidence management responsibilities are coordinated with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
