County establishes $300,000 budget line for emergency remediation after sheriff’s office water leak

Guadalupe County commissioners approved a budget amendment Dec. 2 to establish a fiscal year 2026 budget line of $300,000 for emergency remediation, moving expenses and repairs related to a significant water leak at the sheriff’s office on Oct. 23.
Sheriff’s office staff described initial remediation efforts by Servpro, which billed roughly $86,000 for immediate response including dehumidifiers and drying equipment, and said much of the visible damage has been limited to lower wall areas and carpeting. Staff said some sheetrock removal occurred to address moisture behind metal studs and that the ground floor is largely out of service pending repairs.
The court approved the budget amendment to create a funding source while the county’s insurer (TAC) processes the claim. Staff said TAC has begun the claims process and indicated the insurer had committed to payment but the county will use fund balance and a budget line to expedite repairs in the interim. Commissioners emphasized the importance of maintaining fund balance for emergencies.
The motion passed by voice vote.
