Supervisors approve advertising ordinance to add planning-commission member

At the Jan. 6 meeting the Amherst County Board of Supervisors voted to direct staff to advertise Ordinance 2026‑1, a proposed change to planning-commission membership that would create one additional at-large voting member and increase voting membership from six to seven.
Mister Creasy presented the ordinance and said the change would make the county more consistent with neighboring jurisdictions and reduce the chance of tie votes on land-use matters. Creasy described that some surrounding jurisdictions have seven voting members and cited past tie votes as a practical reason to shift to an odd number of voting members.
Miss Tucker moved to direct staff to advertise Ordinance 2026‑1 for a public hearing on Jan. 20, 2026; the motion carried by voice vote. The ordinance will be the subject of public hearing and comment at the Jan. 20 meeting, at which point the board may take further action.
