Superintendent Frank Hauser said the Juneau School District closed schools for the day to prioritize safety amid the storm, and that engineers and CBJ officials are conducting ongoing roof inspections and clearing operations.
Yesterday the district relocated students from Mendenhall River Community School after a later review prompted immediate action. "Buses started loading at 12:33PM, and the building was all cleared with students arriving at Thunder Mountain Middle School by 12:50PM," Hauser said. By 2:40PM, "all students had been picked up by families or by their regular school bus."
Hauser and CBJ officials said engineers had cleared some facilities for occupancy earlier in the week but that conditions can change rapidly; crews will continue roof walk‑throughs and shoveling through the weekend. The district said schools that cannot be cleared for occupancy will transition to remote learning, with principals providing school‑specific information to families.
Hauser encouraged families to keep contact information up to date and to sign up for district alerts; he said remote learning would be implemented on a school‑by‑school basis rather than as a blanket district closure unless conditions warrant it.
Next steps: district and CBJ engineers will reassess roof loads over the weekend; parents should watch school and district communications for decisions on reopenings or remote learning.
