At a meeting of the Nominating and Rules Committee in Jonesboro, committee members voted to reestablish the Public Services Committee as a standing committee of the city council and to enhance the role of the Parks and Recreation Community Advisory Board as a structured resource to the Parks and Recreation Department.
"In the interest of clearer oversight, strong community engagement, and more efficient coordination across our city's quality of life services, I respectfully request that the committee take action to reestablish the public services committee as a standing committee of the city council and enhance the involvement of Parks and Recreation Community Advisory Board so that both bodies actively serve as a structured resource to the Parks and Recreations Department," said Unidentified Speaker 1, a committee member, when introducing the proposal. Committee members moved and seconded the measure and approved it by a voice vote. Unidentified Speaker 1 said they would carry the item to the full council that evening.
Earlier in the meeting, Unidentified Speaker 1 nominated Chris Gibson for chair; Unidentified Speaker 2 seconded the nomination and the committee approved the election by voice vote. The committee also moved to accept the minutes as read; that motion, offered by Unidentified Speaker 2 and seconded, was approved by voice vote.
After the vote on the Public Services Committee, Unidentified Speaker 2 said they had wanted time to ask questions before the motion was taken. Unidentified Speaker 4 asked whether Parks and Recreation and the city's Jet service would be grouped together under the reestablished committee; Unidentified Speaker 1 confirmed they would. Members discussed meeting frequency, with attendees indicating quarterly meetings and additional sessions as needed, and Unidentified Speaker 1 saying volunteers to serve on committees would be solicited at the full council meeting.
The committee adjourned after the business was completed. The matter will next be considered by the full council, per the committee's direction.
