Margate recognizes 8U softball champions; commission to consider free Calypso Cove passes for youth sports

The Margate commission used its Dec. 10 meeting to recognize the Margate 8U youth softball team for a strong season and to present student- and teacher-of-the-month awards across local schools.
A commissioner presenting the team said the squad went undefeated after an opening loss and beat teams from Parkland, Creek and Spring; coaches and parents were thanked and the team will receive plaques. The presenter also noted an item on the commission agenda that, if approved, would provide a free Calypso Cove water-park pass to anyone who signs up for the city's youth sports program. The presenter noted the measure "isn't voted on yet" and "it'll be voted on tonight."
The meeting included multiple student and teacher recognitions. According to the mayor's remarks, teachers will receive a $20 Walmart gift card and two Calypso Cove passes; students will receive a $10 Walmart gift card, four Calypso Cove passes and branded swag including challenge coins and department t-shirts. Schools honored in the session included Abundant Life Christian Academy, Ascend Academy Charter High School, Atlantic West Elementary, Broward Math and Science Schools, Liberty Elementary, Margate Elementary, Margate Middle and Phil's Academy Preparatory School.
Coach Brett Frankel introduced players and coaches by name and underscored teamwork and resilience after an early loss. City leaders invited families to take photos during a recess and said plaques would be distributed to players and coaches.
The presentation concluded with a recess for family photos; commissioners said the youth sports-related benefit would be decided later in the meeting under a separate agenda item.
