Council authorizes application for state housing infrastructure grants

The Town Council voted unanimously Nov. 17 to authorize town staff to apply for funds from the State Department of Housing's housing infrastructure program. Planning Director Nicole Lofontin presented a memo identifying municipal infrastructure projects that could expand housing capacity, including sewer extensions along Post Road and adaptive-reuse opportunities for outdated commercial properties.
Lofontin told the council the program is one of several state funding streams intended to support housing and that the town is compiling a project list rather than prioritizing them in rank order at this stage. "These are North Kingstown projects that need to be done," she said, adding that some applications may be submitted by private developers for project-specific infrastructure. Councilmembers asked whether PFAS settlement funds were related; staff said the state grant is separate and that the town will report to council on PFAS settlement status in a future update.
The motion to authorize the application passed by voice vote. Staff said they would continue outreach to local developers and refine project descriptions to match grant requirements.
