The Planning Board on Nov. 25 voted to forward a positive referral to the Zoning Board for Iona Preparatory School’s proposed field upgrades at 255 Wilmot Road, including bleachers, a press box, concessions with bathrooms and four permanent light stanchions that require a height variance.
Tony Joffrey, counsel for Iona Prep, said the project replaces temporary wheeled lights (about 25 feet tall, powered by diesel generators) with four professionally designed, fixed LED poles approximately 80 feet tall. He told the board the design will direct foot‑candles to the field and comply with property‑line limits (projected 0–0.02 fc where 0.05 is permitted), which would reduce glare and eliminate the noise and emissions of multiple diesel generators.
Board members who remembered prior iterations noted that landscaping planted years earlier now screens views from Wilmot, and that the proposed lighting and updated bleacher placement are an improvement over temporary lighting. The board voted for a positive referral to the Zoning Board; the applicant will return with full site‑plan details, specifications and lighting sheets for final review if the ZBA grants the height variance.
