The Planning Board issued a neutral referral on Nov. 25 to the Zoning Board for Young Israel of Scarsdale’s application to renovate and expand its synagogue at 1313 Weaver Street.
Attorney Diana Kolev said the proposal includes an enlarged social hall, expanded religious education space, a new lobby and kitchen upgrades, and a rooftop courtyard for youth programming. Because of site constraints and grade changes, the project requests modest zoning relief: building coverage increase from 30% to 31.5%, a reduced rear‑yard setback (from 60 to about 31.6 feet) and retaining walls within required yards that exceed a 4‑foot limit.
Board members discussed whether the reduced rear setback is sensitive given the property adjoins a commercial building and ultimately voted to forward a neutral referral for the Zoning Board to consider the variances. If the ZBA grants relief, site‑plan issues will be considered later when the applicant returns.
