The Nye County Board voted unanimously to authorize county staff to have informal discussions with the Nye County Employees Association (NCEA) about alleged flaws in a recent pay study that informed union negotiations.
Commissioner Ian Bain, who brought the item forward, said multiple employees and some county officers raised concerns that the study relied on inaccurate or incomplete comparables. He said the governing question is whether the union membership voted on information that later proved unreliable and asked the board to pursue a limited scope review rather than reopen full negotiations.
Legal counsel cautioned against using the word "negotiations," recommending the board authorize informal discussions to avoid unintended contract exposure. After that guidance, the board approved a motion — phrased as direction to staff to "discuss only with the NCEA about the pay study" — and the motion carried 5–0.
Supporters of the measure emphasized the operational risk: some dispatchers have threatened to quit, and accurate pay information matters for retaining critical public-safety positions. Opponents warned of precedent if the county reopened bargaining broadly.
The board did not order a refund or rescind prior contracts; instead it directed staff and counsel to pursue discussions with the association and report back with options for addressing any confirmed errors in the study.
Vote: direction approved, 5–0. Next steps: county staff to meet informally with NCEA representatives to identify specific study issues and return with recommendations.
