The Nye County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 21 approved a $25,000 program funding request from Nevada Outreach to support case‑managed direct financial assistance for local veterans and surviving spouses.
Jessica Barlow, family resource supervisor for Nevada Outreach, told the board the funds would be used to provide rental or mortgage assistance, utility payments, auto repair and other emergency needs, and that recipients are verified via DD‑214 documents. "This money will address immediate needs and stabilize veterans with small targeted interventions," Barlow said.
Public comment included skepticism about whether the organization’s operating costs disproportionately consume grant funds and whether existing veteran organizations should receive allocations instead; several local veterans and American Legion representatives urged support for direct-assistance programs. Kathy McKenna, Nevada Outreach’s executive director, said about $24,212 in the request is earmarked for direct client aid and asserted the group has served veterans for several years with mailed reports and client records.
Commissioners discussed the funding source (a veterans services line carved from brothel‑derived revenues) and the number of applications available in the program year; the board approved the $25,000 request by unanimous vote and directed staff to continue monitoring and reporting program outcomes.
