The Nye County Board of County Commissioners appointed Robert Otteson and Gwen Placentia (Placentia spelled in the record) to fill two unexpired terms on the Northern Nye County Hospital District board on Nov. 18.
Robert Otteson, who said he has lived in Tonopah his entire life and recently retired from the Nevada Test and Training Range after 38 years, told commissioners the town’s health services are "in dire need" and that he wanted to help address local hospital capacity issues. Gwen Placentia described grant‑writing experience and a long‑term interest in expanding clinic services toward a restored hospital.
Several current trustees and local residents spoke in support of the candidates, highlighting institutional knowledge and the need for new grant‑writing capacity on the board. Commissioner Jabbour moved to appoint Otteson and Placentia to terms expiring January 2027; the motion was seconded and carried 5‑0.
Next steps: county clerk’s office to process oaths and onboarding paperwork for the appointees.
