Supervisor Shamann Walton used his new‑business remarks on Nov. 4 to demand immediate transparency and oversight after learning of a nearly one‑year delay in disclosure by the U.S. Navy about airborne plutonium detected at the Hunters Point Shipyard.
Walton said the Navy identified plutonium above allowable levels at Parcel G in November 2024 but did not report the finding to city officials until October 2025. He called the delayed disclosure "absolutely unacceptable," requested a hearing and letters of inquiry to the U.S. Navy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the California Department of Public Health and the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and asked each agency to provide all documents, test results and explanations for the delay and what public protections were in place during the interval.
Walton said Bayview Hunters Point residents have endured years of broken promises and that the city must pursue independent oversight and a full cleanup. He also requested letters of inquiry to several city departments asking why decisions continue to place burdens on District 10 communities, citing RV enforcement, tiny cabin relocations and other actions that disproportionately affect the district.
