Board backs Teamsters' organizing at Bayview Amazon site; one supervisor recuses

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Dec. 16 adopted a resolution expressing support for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and workers at the DCK6 Amazon warehouse in Bayview.

Supervisor Mandelmann, speaking for the board, said the resolution signals the city's standing as "a union town" and acknowledges complaints the union has filed with the National Labor Relations Board alleging unfair labor practices at the facility. Supervisor Cheryl announced she had been advised by the city attorney to recuse herself from the matter; the board excused her from the vote. The clerk recorded 10 ayes and one recusal; the resolution was adopted without further amendment.

Supervisor Mandelmann noted the board's presence at an earlier demonstration with Amazon workers and local Teamsters, and cited card-signing and ongoing organizing activity at the warehouse. The resolution allows the board to express support for workers seeking recognition and a fair bargaining process; it does not impose binding obligations on the employer.

What this means: The board's action is a political- and policy-level statement of support for organizing. Enforcement questions and any remedies would be handled through the NLRB and labor-law processes referenced in petitioning documents.
