Committee advances ordinance implementing Proposition O to permit reproductive-health clinics citywide

The Land Use & Transportation Committee unanimously voted Dec. 15 to send to the full Board of Supervisors an ordinance that amends the Planning Code to identify districts where reproductive health clinics are principally permitted, a change required by Proposition O, passed by voters in November 2024.
Aaron Star of the Planning Department told the committee the Planning Commission considered the item and adopted a recommendation for approval. "This ordinance was necessitated by the passage of Prop O," Star said, adding the department is available to answer questions.
Vice Chair Cheyenne Chen and Supervisor Bilal Mahmood both voiced support on the record. Chen said the San Francisco Reproductive Freedom Act reflected a citywide commitment to low-barrier access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including safe and legal abortion services. "At a time when reproductive rights are under attack nationwide, it is critical that San Francisco continue to provide low barrier access to comprehensive and high quality reproductive healthcare services in the city," Chen said.
There was no public comment on the item. Chair Mirna Melgar moved that the ordinance be recommended as a committee report; the clerk recorded three ayes and the committee advanced the ordinance to the Board for consideration.
